1963-1964 · The Early Sessions: Book 1 of The Seth MaterialAI summary (single book)
In The Early Sessions Book 1, Seth provides a multidimensional and detailed exposition of the concept of "personality":
I. The definition and essence of personality Seth uses the term "personality" to refer to the complete individual manifested in physical form in one life . Personality is the manifestation of the entity in a particular reality, described as "a petal on a multi-petaled flower" . The entity uses personalities as its own "capsules" or "compartments," making neat divisions in memory and other respects . The life of an individual can be regarded as a "dream" of the entity; the personality is produced by the entity, attains varying degrees of independence, and ultimately returns to the entity .
II. The distinction between the whole self and the present personality Seth distinguishes between the "present personality" and the "whole self." The whole self contains the actor, the mover, the breather, and the dreamer, and possesses the complete ability to use both the inner senses and the outer senses . The present personality is limited on the physical level and cannot travel directly to the complete entity, but that portion of the whole self ignored by the ego can nevertheless enter the sphere of influence of the entity . In addition, within the personality there exists a "self-conscious portion" that transcends the subconscious, knows its own origin, and is responsible for receiving all inner data .
III. The structure of personality: primary personality and fragments Personality is not a single monolithic block, but a complex structure. It is composed of a "primary personality" and smaller "fragments" . Under harsh circumstances, these smaller fragments may take over control in order to protect the primary personality from disintegration . The subconscious serves as the barrier and threshold of the present personality . In each and every life, the new consciousness struggles to hold the entire present personality together, and strives to bury in the subconscious any knowledge that might threaten the dominance of the present ego .
IV. Free will and the limitations set by the entity Although free will does exist, the choices of the present personality on the physical level are extremely limited, and can only be made within familiar alternatives and camouflage frameworks . These limitations are actually set or chosen by the entity for the specific personality . The entity organizes and guides the personalities while allowing them free will . After developing to a certain degree, a personality can even evolve into a new entity by virtue of its own strength, abilities, and desires .
V. Reincarnational resurrection, karma, and potential development The reincarnation of personality on the physical plane usually requires experiencing the three roles of mother, father, and child, in order to experience human growth . Before leaving the physical plane forever, the personality must develop its potentials as much as possible . The personality will voluntarily choose difficult or tragic circumstances (such as becoming a persecuted group); this is not punishment, but a karmic compensation and a needed self-discipline . Experiences, talents, and "old wounds" from past lives (such as fears or psychological traumas) remain in the mental genes and influence the present personality without its awareness .
VI. Death and transition Death is merely the release of the personality from the physical plane or physical field . After death, the personality slowly regains knowledge of its own reincarnations and comes to understand its relationship with the entity . Compared with the drastic adjustment faced at birth, death is an easier process of termination for the personality, accompanied by a period of rest and adjustment .
