1963-1964 · The Early Sessions: Book 1 of The Seth MaterialAI summary (single book)
In The Early Sessions Book 1, Seth gives a multidimensional exposition of the concept of "death," defining it as a natural process in which consciousness detaches from the physical body and transitions to another level of reality.
I. The nature and definition of death Seth clearly states that death is merely the release of the personality from the physical plane, or "physical field," and nothing more . For the ego, death is often regarded as a terrifying end, but in fact death, as a termination, does not involve a decisive new adjustment that must be faced immediately, so the shock it brings is far less severe than that of "birth" . The shock of birth is more severe because the personality is not yet fully focused at that time and must immediately adapt to an unfamiliar environment; death, by contrast, provides a buffer period of rest and adjustment .
II. Gradual recognition and the transition process after death Seth points out that people do not always immediately realize they have died after death, because consciousness continues, and this may cause confusion .
- Gradual recognition: The recognition of death is a gradual process achieved through stages of "withdrawal" and "arrival" . For example, the deceased may return to the physical environment, see themselves lying on the ground, and yet be unable for a time to understand what has happened .
- Greeting by others: After detaching from the physical body, the individual is usually greeted by acquaintances from other lifetimes . In the final stage before death, a person in the process of withdrawal may also already have begun to communicate with deceased relatives, such as walking with a deceased brother .
- The difference between sudden death and gradual death: Accidental or sudden death brings momentary confusion, and the process of materialization on another level may be so abrupt as to cause shock and bewilderment in the personality . By contrast, a gradual and gentle withdrawal, in which the personality gradually reduces its attention to the physical plane and regathers itself on another level, is a more favorable mode of transition .
III. Subconscious decision and preparation for death Death is often a subconscious decision made by a deeper level of the inner self . However, the conscious mind is usually entirely unaware of this decision, and Seth emphasizes that this "ignorance" is absolutely necessary, otherwise the conscious mind would collapse and disintegrate under the strain before the whole self had made the necessary preparations .
IV. Adjustment after death, the whole self, and the entity After leaving the physical plane, the individual undergoes a period of adjustment, because the camouflage patterns of the physical plane are extremely rigid, and this causes a kind of "death shock" .
- Regaining memory: After death, the whole self slowly regains knowledge of all its own reincarnations and comes to understand its relationship with its own entity .
- Relationship with the entity: After the personality comes to know the entity, it usually greets the entity as a son greets a father, while retaining its independent individuality within the entity, and this process is entirely voluntary and contains no compulsion .
- Integration of knowledge: For those who received instruction on the physical plane through deep hypnosis or deep trance states, the integration of subconscious knowledge and its transfer to the personality consciousness usually takes place on the "midplane" after death .
V. Overcoming the fear of death and the final reincarnation Seth points out that the fear of death originates from the limitations of the ego and from attachment to duality . If during physical life the personality can recognize the "whole self" and realize that its truest part is not bound by physical matter, it will no longer regard death as a personal end . In addition, in the final reincarnation on earth, the physical body will be returned completely and without division at physical death, and no physical property will be left on that plane through children .
