1. What are Seth's specific claims about this concept? How many times, in which books, and does the wording change over time?
In Session 218 in 1965, Seth stated that after physical death, the ego becomes subconscious in the next existence, with its conscious knowledge preserved electromagnetically [early-sessions-5 §218]; after death, the individual's time-two consciousness becomes dominant, while time-one knowledge remains available [early-sessions-5 §218]; after physical death, time three becomes accessible to the individual, similar to the availability of time two in the current existence [early-sessions-5 §218]. Seth also compared Priestley's and Dunne's theories of time, noting that Priestley believed time-two consciousness dominates after death, but Seth held that this view remains bound by time one [early-sessions-5 §218]. Seth questioned the state of "consciousness retained but personality absent," calling "consciousness without personality a strange bird" [early-sessions-5 §218].
In Session 455 in 1969, Seth predicted that Jane and I would die within a short time of each other, when our earthly work was done, but gave no date or order [early-sessions-9 §455].
2. What mechanism does he provide?
At physical death, the ego becomes subconscious in the next existence, with its conscious knowledge preserved electromagnetically [early-sessions-5 §218]. Death is not an ending but a change of form [early-sessions-4 §182].
3. Are there observable inferences or explicit predictions (including time, quantity, conditions)?
- The physician's prediction of death for a dying patient may itself become a factor in causing death: "In some cases, such a prediction can make death a fact—whereas its opposite can rebuild the patient's belief in his ability to live" [personal-reality §654].
- But the prediction is not decisive: "No one dies because a doctor tells him he is going to die" [personal-reality §654].
- Each person knows, generally, the challenges he faces, his overall plan, and the time of his death: "Everyone, generally, knows his challenges and overall plan, and the time of his death" [personal-reality §654].
- The decision about the time of death can be changed in the present moment: "But even such decisions can be changed at any moment in your now—the entire body can regenerate in ways unpredictable under ordinary medical conditions" [personal-reality §654].
- There is one specific case of death prediction: within a certain organization, a death would occur at a high level, "I am not sure of the date of the death involved here. It will occur within a year and a half, perhaps within six months" [early-sessions-4 §166].
- A statement on the nature of death: "There is no separate, indivisible, specific point of death. Life is a state of becoming, and death is part of this process of becoming" [seth-speaks §535].
- Death as a condition is described as "not concentrating upon physical reality at all" [seth-speaks §535].
4. Where does he say contemporary science went wrong, and in what direction should it look?
- Several of science's theories about the physical universe are wrong: for example, the expanding universe theory is wrong, and space itself is curved; true interstellar travel must be accomplished by leaving the physical camouflage and relying on the mobility of consciousness and the psyche [unknown-reality-1 §702].
- Science is wrong about the time constraints of space travel, thinking it requires long physical time, when in fact scientists will be forced to consider expedients such as telepathy and will eventually turn to inner abilities [unknown-reality-1 §702].
- The error of evolution theory lies in believing that life evolves from pure chance and matter, whereas in reality "consciousness always creates form, not the other way around"; evolution is closely connected with religious and psychic ideas [unknown-reality-2 §744].
- The picture described by the second law of thermodynamics—a closed universe running down through entropy—is wrong, because no closed systems exist; energy (consciousness) is constantly exchanged; the law appears reliable only because of our limited interpretation through the central nervous system [unknown-reality-2 §744].
- Science has consistently ignored the role of consciousness in the formation of matter—for example, attempting to produce life from dead matter while excluding consciousness; in reality, all matter is composed of conscious EE units and CUs [unknown-reality-2 §744].
- Science should turn to the inner realm: the future "true psychic physicist" will use consciousness to flow into inner reality, without instruments, using only the mind [unknown-reality-2 §744]; it must recognize that consciousness and its formation are fundamental realities beyond the concepts of particles, waves, and fields [unknown-reality-1 §702].
- If science persists in clinging to concepts of subatomic particles or waves, it will go astray; it should adopt the idea of "interrelated fields," but must still go further to acknowledge the conscious reality behind them [unknown-reality-1 §702].
5. What experiments or exercises did he suggest? What did Jane and Rob actually do at the time, and what did they observe?
FLAG: This question did not pass the citation gate (allowed citations: dreams-projections §2, early-sessions-5 §230, early-sessions-1 §12). The retrieval set is in work/B/death/q5.json.
6. Supplementary or contradictory material from other concepts in the corpus related to this concept?
Death and birth are mutually contained: birth and death are "built in" simultaneously, each implying the other; the body knows its death at birth and its birth at death, so death is as creative as birth and is a necessary condition for action and consciousness [nature-of-psyche §783]. Death is a longer interval in the pulsation of consciousness: consciousness flickers like a flame, pulsing between being "alive" and "unconscious" (or "dead"); what is called death is merely the insertion of a longer interval of non-perception—a "long pause in another dimension" [seth-speaks §9]. Life itself is in a state of constant small-scale dying: the atoms and molecules of the body continually die and are reborn, and if cells did not die the body could not continue; thus a person is always surrounded by his own numerous small deaths while alive, and life is a "process of becoming" of which death is a part [seth-speaks §9]. Post-death experience is conditioned by belief: those who believe in hellfire may hallucinate hell, and those who believe in a stereotyped heaven may hallucinate heaven; these hallucinations are temporary. Consciousness forms reality according to its own expectations [seth-speaks §9]. One may not immediately realize one is dead after death: time is needed to gradually adjust, involving a staged recognition of "withdrawal and arrival," and one will be greeted by acquaintances from other lives [early-sessions-1 §3]. Regarding death as the end of personal consciousness is a result of belief: when belief holds death to be an ending, death appears to be the most thorough tragedy; but on a larger scale all events are creative [personal-sessions-4 §?]. Certain seemingly accidental deaths may be planned at the unconscious level: the person may unconsciously choose a "quick death" to avoid prolonged illness, or may approach death to bring new vitality to the family; these events are known at the unconscious level [personal-sessions-4 §?].
7. Questions not yet asked
- Can Seth's assertion that "a physician's death prediction may contribute to death" be tested through randomized controlled trials in hospice care (e.g., informing vs. not informing patients of prognosis) to measure the effect size?
- Seth claims that at death the ego becomes subconscious and consciousness is preserved electromagnetically—can longitudinal monitoring of residual electromagnetic activity in brain-dead patients be used to search for repeatable anomalous signals?
- Do Seth's "pulsations of consciousness" and the intervals between life and death correspond to measurable physiological rhythms (such as heart rate variability or EEG microstates), and could a blinded analysis be designed in near-death experience research?
- Regarding the statement that "post-death hallucinations are determined by belief," can expectancy-effect experiments in psychology be used to compare categorical differences in the content reported by near-death experiencers from different cultural backgrounds?
- Can Seth's claim that "the body knows its death at birth" be translated into a test of epigenetic clocks in cellular aging programs—that is, can physiological state at birth predict lifespan?
