Research Program / Claims / states-of-consciousness-3

When you close your eyes and lie still, the inner eye presents images and scenes; their form changes with state of consciousness, representing dominant thoughts and feelings.

当你闭上眼睛静躺时,内眼会显现图像与画面,其形式随意识状态改变而改变,代表主导的想法与感受。

This program treats the Seth Material as a source of hypotheses, not as doctrine to be validated. Lead dossiers are AI-compiled from the corpus with a book-and-session citation after every statement; literature reviews are AI web-search summaries whose references were all DOI-verified against Crossref; the agenda draft is an AI synthesis. None of it is Seth's original text, and none of it represents scientific consensus. English fields are machine-translated; the Chinese text is authoritative.

Adjudicating experiment
Corresponding to extended question 1: recruit ~100 people, each with 3 simultaneous EEG-fMRI sessions of ~90 minutes, project 9–12 months; alternate eyes-closed awake quiet rest and natural sleep onset, with random probes reporting just-seen visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile content, emotion, and clarity. Also perform independent localization for each sensory channel, and random emotion or theme priming. Pre-register analysis of default mode network and sensory cortex BOLD changes before and after modality transitions, with EEG controlling sleep stage; correct for hemodynamic response delay, respiration, and report actions, using held-out participant validation. Olfactory events insufficient for primary analysis are exploratory.
Suggested paper title
State-Dependent Transitions in Spontaneous Multisensory Imagery During Eyes-Closed Rest: An EEG-fMRI Experience-Sampling Study
What it would overturn
Support for inner imagery and its state-dependence does not overturn mainstream assumptions, because sensory cortex involvement in mental imagery is already accepted.
Candidate labs / funders
Yukiyasu Kamitani; Tomoyasu Horikawa; Francesca Siclari
Specificity of Seth's formulation
The first half heavily overlaps with hypnagogic imagery research; the second half 'representing dominant thoughts and feelings' lacks predefined correspondence rules and is easily post-hoc interpreted.
Note
Supported applies only to imagery occurrence and state-related changes, not that everyone sees images with eyes closed; no study directly confirmed visual-to-offactory or visual-to-tactile conversions with fixed default network timing, and fMRI correlations do not establish causal order.
