Define 'inherent ability' as an untrained recipient cell recognizing the category of random stimulus applied to an isolated sender cell. Choose bacteria, yeast, protists, and three mammalian cell types; three laboratories, about 30 independent pairs of culture devices per cell type per laboratory, over 18–24 months; use sub-channel isolation as in item 11 and blind decoding. Pre-specify minimum recognition abilities for each model and perform equivalence tests; multiple positive models still cannot prove all cells, while one reliable negative can refute the defined universal version.
