Research Program / Claims / ego-3

The ego selectively receives information during dreaming and censors content that threatens its dominant position, and due to functional limitations cannot make decisions as rapidly as the intuitive self.

ego在梦境中会选择性地接收信息并审查威胁其主导地位的内容,且因功能限制无法像直觉自我般快速决策。

This program treats the Seth Material as a source of hypotheses, not as doctrine to be validated. Lead dossiers are AI-compiled from the corpus with a book-and-session citation after every statement; literature reviews are AI web-search summaries whose references were all DOI-verified against Crossref; the agenda draft is an AI synthesis. None of it is Seth's original text, and none of it represents scientific consensus. English fields are machine-translated; the Chinese text is authoritative.

Adjudicating experiment
Question 1: First conduct a feasibility trial with about 30 participants, then recruit about 120 participants across multiple centers; each participant undergoes 1 adaptation night and 3 nights of synchronized polysomnography and fMRI. Before sleep, randomly present self-evaluative threatening materials, equally negative non-self materials, and neutral materials, and manipulate suppression instructions. Upon awakening during REM stages, report immediately; blind coders rate self-threat and material inclusion rates; analyze the relationship between predetermined prefrontal ROIs and content, while distinguishing between "not incorporated during sleep" and "not reported after awakening." Project duration: approximately 18–24 months. For the sub-proposition on rapid decision-making, conduct two additional experiments with about 240 participants to compare speed–accuracy trade-offs and training dependence between time-limited intuitive judgments and deliberate judgments.

What it would overturn
If active gating independent of memory salience, emotional intensity, and post-awakening report bias is demonstrated, this would revise models holding that dream content selection can be explained by memory reactivation and emotional processing without requiring a self-protective censor.

Specificity of Seth's formulation
"Maintaining dominance" adds a motivational explanation beyond general emotional processing hypotheses, but does not specify which information would be excluded, altered, or retained; without such a priori rules, almost any dream can be reinterpreted post hoc.
Note
Technically feasible but resource-intensive; correlation between prefrontal activation and threatening content cannot by itself adjudicate a censorship mechanism; dream rebound only refutes a simple version; the [Geneva team](https://www.unige.ch/medecine/synapsycentre/news/le-mystere-des-reves) continues research on dreams and emotion.
