Establish a registry of about 300-500 projects explicitly targeting altered conscious experience via VR, neurofeedback, and brain stimulation; pre-register 'manipulation' as changes in state or behavior without fully informed consent, and 'autonomous benefit' as participant-chosen goals with exit options; independent double-blind coding of deployment, funding, withdrawal mechanisms, and outcomes, follow-up 3-5 years. Measure institutional epistemological attitudes, governance, and commercial incentives separately, and use changes in governance institutions as quasi-experiments. This design can estimate risk proportions and associations but cannot easily isolate the causal role of abstract 'objective science ideals.'
