Measure changes in external objects and subjective afterimages separately: approximately 120 participants would each complete 80–120 color-adaptation trials, with 5–30 seconds of adaptation followed by 60–120 seconds of tracking. Compare single-exponential, biexponential, stretched-exponential, and prespecified adaptation models, using eye tracking, pupillometry, and a photometer to rule out display afterglow, over 9–12 months. If an explanation based on external energy dissipation is maintained, an energy reservoir and conservation accounting must also be defined, the corresponding power measured with independent detectors, and the readings shown to predict afterimages beyond ordinary thermal, optical, and neural adaptation explanations.

What it would overturn
Finding nonexponential afterimage decay alone would not overturn mainstream theory. Only detecting an external residual signal necessary to explain afterimages would revise the assumption that “afterimages do not require an external object to continue emitting the corresponding image signal.”

Specificity of Seth's formulation
“Continually appearing and gradually weakening” applies equally to neural adaptation, afterglow, and many dissipative processes. The original text does not predict nonexponential decay, so a measured curve cannot retrospectively be credited as a successful prediction.
Note
Here, untested refers to physical forms and the mechanism of construction energy. Visual afterimages and their decay in the psychophysical sense have long been studied. Motion aftereffects constitute a different paradigm and cannot be substituted merely because their names are similar.
